Cathedral and Diocesan Museum

The entrance to the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum leads through the cathedral cloister. (Source: Cathedral Museum)The visitors reaches the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum, the second largest of its kind in Germany, through the Cathedral’s double-storeyed cloister. The Cathedral Museum shows religious art from nearly two millennia, which used once to belong to the furnishings of Mainz Cathedral or churches of the bishopric, in the Gothic cloister, the former chapter rooms and the vaulted halls from the High Middle Ages.

In the twin-aisled vaulted hall from the Hohenstaufen period, stone monuments from the early and high Middle Ages are to be seen, thus above all the fragments of the western rood screen which the sculptor known to us as the “Master of Naumburg” created around 1240.

The basement vault of the Cathedral and Diocesan it to be seen with various exhibits. The Cathedral Museum also includes the chapel of St. Nicolas and its sacristy which serve for the presentation of the Mainz Cathedral treasure.

Special exhibitions take place regularly to supplement the permanent collection.
