The Mainz Philharmonic Orchestra augments staged presentation with a concert series as well as children’s and youth programs all of which are performed in the Staatstheater.
The Mainz State Theater is dedicated to legitimate theater and music theater, preserving the classics and traditional works as well as presenting contemporary drama and music theater. World premieres and first time German-language stage productions provide a highly varied and exciting annual season. In recent years the Mainz State Theater has distinguished itself in all performance areas well beyond the state borders winning for itself international recognition.
Theaterical performances have a long history in Mainz going back some 2,000 (!) years to Roman times. With the completion of the new construction of the Small House in 1997 and the complete renovation and re-opening of the Large Theater in 2001, Mainz boasts a thoroughly modern and state-of-the-art stage technology housed in the buildings designed by Georg Moller.
Some 500 performances of opera, theater and ballet are given every year including those in the Studio Stage of the TiC. The Mainz State Theater has been organized as a limited liability company since 1989 and exists under the co-sponsorship of the City of Mainz and of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz.
