Like most major cities, Mainz, too, has a marathon, drawing thousands, including runners from all over the world. Far more spectators observe than make the Sunday run, plentiful entertainment regaling the crowd. Musical groups perform at junctures along the route, which starts rhineside at the Rheingoldhalle proceeds through Neustadt, Mombach, Neustadt, Weisenau, Altstadt, Kostheim and back to the Rheingoldhalle. Runners enjoy a hi-carb pasta dinner on Saturday.
An ecumenial worship service the evening before the Sunday run is open to all. The big sports equipment companies chip in to subsidize events and profits are donated to handicapped athletes. All inall, it's a great time outdoor and yet another reason why life on the Rhine in Mainz seems to be an endless marathon of fun and festivals.
