Gutenberg's trail-blazing invention was the setting of letters made of molten lead type by hand. The Monument consists of nine sandstone cubes reminiscent of the leaden-block letters. The surfaces facing towards the Cathedral are so arranged to spell the name GUTENBERG. The same ornamented Capital letters beginning each chapter of the Gutenberg bible are reproduced here.
