Day of German Unity

2nd and 3rd of October, 2017

It is celebrated every year on 3rd of October, the Day of German Unity. Traditionally the official celebrations take place in the Federal state of Germany that holds the presidency of Federal Assembly at that point in time.

Under the motto "Together we are Germany" the national holiday is celebrated in the host city of Mainz and is characterised by black-red-gold, the colours of the Hambach festival in 1832, the cradle of German democracy.

Protocolary events and festival

Apart from protocolary events on 3rd of October, the festive service in St. Martin’s cathedral and the reception of the federal presidents in the Rheingoldhalle for invited guests, a big festival for citizens is the main attraction. On both days over 500,000 guests are expected. There will be an entertainment programme on several stages on 2nd and 3rd of October. SWR will guarantee a great ambiance with its radio channels SWR1 and SWR 4 in Schillerplatz (Schiller Square). RPR1. and bigFM are located in Ernst-Ludwig Platz (Ernst-Ludwig Square). Rockland Radio ensures entertainment in Tritonplatz (Triton square).

The city of Mainz operates its own stage in Bischofsplatz (Bischofs Square) on occasion of the national holiday. On the "Mainz stage" everything revolves around the art and culture scene of the city. Residents as well as visitors gain insight into the creative scene of Mainz which has a lot to offer. Cultural institutions such as the state theatre of Mainz, the Peter Cornelius Conservatory or the Mainz School of Music but also successful musicians and comedians from Mainz will create stage highlights.

Mainz Greeters

You are a visitor of Mainz and want to get to know the city in a special and personal way? Then the Mainz greeters are the right people for you! The word "greeter" naturally comes from the English word "to greet" meaning welcoming someone. With a greet a local takes you on a walking tour through the city and presents it from his or her own point of view.

It especially is about getting to know each other, a friendly welcoming in the city and the exchange of locals and guests. On the website of the Mainz Greeters you will get more information and can sign up for a greet.

Presentations of the federal bodies and states

As they should on the Day of German Unity the 16 federal states will present themselves in Mainz. Visitors are invited to go on a journey through Germany in the centre of Mainz and may try all sorts of culinary specialities from every corner of the country.

The Federal Council, the German parliament and the federal government will be represented in Mainz with big display areas. The citizens can inform themselves intensively on the constitutional bodies and can experience politics close up and multimedia on these days.

Evening show

The festivities on occasion of the Day of German Unity end on 3rd of October with a great evening show on the Rhine. Lights, animations and music will stage the German history from perspective of the country Rhineland-Palatinate – more will not be revealed. An impressive programme is to be expected!
