Eleven tips - Mainz in the rain

Wet, cold, grey - despite the rainy weather you can experience a lot in Mainz! Culture, sports events and Mainz way of life can be playfully combined.
In the Roman passage you don't only escape the rain on your shopping tour. Here the underground "Isis and Mater Magna sanctuary" hides.

Don't miss out on visiting the Gutenberg-Museum and learn more about the invention of printing with moveable type. The history of churches you can smell in the inside of the Mainz landmark - St. Martin's Cathedral in the core of the old town.

You want to explore several sights of the city but remain dry? Then get on the Gutenberg express and discover the impressive Mainz hotspots on the way.

1st tip: Wander on Roman traces.

...and submerge into a long passed time. Some remains of the Roman Era lie hidden in the underground Mainz. And where would you be better protected from the rain than in the Roman passage.

2nd tip: Experience performance.

On the Mainz stages great entertainment is offered. In the categories play, opera and ballet classical as well as modern works are in the programme. With the young stage Mainz and the traditional Christmas fairytale at the State Theatre also small guests are entertained.

3rd tip: Let yourself be inspired.

... by the treasures of the museums in Mainz. Here you can travel from the Stone Age to the Modern Age. From the world-famous Gutenberg Bible, or the extinct animal species to models of Roman ships - fascinating worlds can be discovered.

4th tip: Explore the city with a roof over your head.

With the Gutenberg express you drive past the big sights of the city without getting wet feet. On the principle of hopping on and hopping off you discover the city on the way and when the rain stops you can start a short exploration walk.

5th tip: Smell history.

... in the 1000-year-old St. Martin's Cathedral. To this date the cathedral is the landmark of the city and one of the most important cathedrals in Germany. Maybe you are lucky and you are able to go down to the mysterious corridors of the crypt. Also St. Stephen's church with the world-famous Marc-Chagall windows is a real eye-catcher! The intensive shades of blue are supposed to create positive energy. Try it yourself!

 

6th tip: Mingle with the crowds.

Not only outside in the squares and by the Rhine you can experience Mainz sociability but also inside in traditional wine taverns and cosy cafés. Delicious wines and typical Mainz specialities such as "Spundekäs" (cheese) make it an even more pleasant stay.

7th tip: Go around on skids.

Already in autumn you show a good performance on the ice parquet in the ice rink. In winter time you smell fresh mountain air in the highest ice rink in the Rhine-Main-area at Laubenheimer Höhe.

8th tip: Switch off.

It is raining cats and dogs outside, but you won't let yourself be stressed. The wellness oases of Mainz with a sauna world, thermal bath and water attractions are perfect to escape from daily life.

 

9th tip: Hole the ball.

On the 18 indoor minigolf courses in the old part of Mainz you can dive into a neon-coloured 3D world playing a session of minigolf. Surrounded by superheros such as Captain America you will definitely forget the grey weather outside!

 

10th tip: Be transported into a different world.

Whether international film art or cinema classics - in Mainz diverse filmstrips flicker on the screen. German-language film hits are focussed on during the FILMZ Festival at the end of November. But not only films guarantee good entertainment here. Regularly events take place in the programme cinemas Capitol and Palatin that combine the medium film with music, literature, visual arts and evening sociability. Definitely an outstanding cineastic experience!   

11th tip: Become a mountaineer.

It doesn't always have to be the mountains...also in the Mainz climbing halls climbing fans are high up in the air! Children, beginners, advanced climbers or professionals - fun is guaranteed for everyone!
