General information

The Full-Day Support Act (GaFöG) came into force on October 11, 2021. It applies to all first-grade elementary school children from August 1, 2026.

  • The legal entitlement will be extended by one grade level each year until all primary school children have a legal entitlement to full-day support in the 2029/2030 school year.
  • This includes eight hours from Monday to Friday during the school year and school holidays. Teaching time is included.
  • Registration is voluntary.
  • Lunch is provided.
  • The state can set closing times of up to four weeks during the holidays.
  • The legal entitlement is intended to support the development of all primary school children. This is to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities. It is also intended to close the childcare gap between daycare and school.

There are two implementation options:

  • Model 1:

Full-day school programs come first, for example, full-day schools in the form of optional programs (GTSA). These are free of charge. A supervised elementary school (BGS) run by a support association (e.g., a parents' initiative or other) is also conceivable, but there is a fee for this.

  • Model 2:

If the school does not offer full-day programs, the city of Mainz will provide an afternoon program. This will be run by a youth welfare organization and will incur a fee.

Note:

Since school programs take priority, please first take a look at the information on the legal right to full-day care on the website of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education.

Registration

If an independent youth welfare organization offers afternoon childcare at your school, please register your child via Kinder-Kompass Mainz. Please refer to the table below for an overview of the staggered cost contributions.
