Green islands: Orchard meadow Happiness
Green islands are urban green spaces. A contrasting program to the sealing, densification and monotonous use of land in urban areas.
The "Glück" meadow orchard in the Bretzenheim district is one such green island. A total of 30 trees of old, established fruit tree varieties will be planted here. Further areas are also being sought.

There are currently no openings for tree sponsorships at the "Glück" orchard meadow. If you're interested in sponsoring a tree, you can still send an email to be added to the "waiting list": gruene-inseln@zbm.mainz.de
The idea
Anyone who would like to plant a tree to mark the birth of their child or grandchild has the opportunity to do so here. The shared happiness that parents and grandparents experience as their children and grandchildren grow up can be symbolized by a tree planted in the "Streuobstwiese Glück" (Meadow of Happiness).
How to adopt a tree
For a modest contribution of €50 per tree, you can choose your favorite variety from the list below that is suitable for the location.
Upon request, the fruit tree will be marked with a personalized plaque indicating the sponsorship.
Please let us know in your email which fruit tree you would like from the list of available fruit trees and what you would like to have engraved on the plaque.
The planting season begins in October, so orders for fruit trees should be placed by September at the latest. See also "Rules for using the orchard meadow" at the bottom of this page.

Rules for use
- We look forward to a bountiful harvest from the trees. Please adhere to the harvest season and only pick ripe fruit.
- The city of Mainz is responsible for maintaining the orchard, including planting and pruning the fruit trees. The planting season begins in October, so orders for fruit trees should be placed by September at the latest.
- The city of Mainz reserves the right to make changes to the orchard, including removing trees that are no longer healthy or safe.
Areas sought for further "green islands"
Land is currently being sought for further similar "green islands" in the densely populated city. In addition, the extent to which nature-based educational programs and workshops can be offered on topics related to the "green islands" is being examined, such as courses on pruning fruit trees or workshops on pressing fruit juices.
