Volunteer fire department

Volunteer emergency services provide rapid assistance in Mainz through 11 volunteer fire departments: Bretzenheim, Drais, Ebersheim, Finthen, Gonsenheim, Hechtsheim, Laubenheim, Marienborn, Mombach, Stadt(mitte) and Weisenau.

More than 400 people volunteer their free time here. When the alarm sounds, they leave their work, hobbies, or families behind, rush to the fire station, gear up, and drive to the scene. If larger operations take longer, they also take over staffing the professional fire stations to ensure basic protection in the city.

The volunteer fire departments have modern firefighting and personnel transport vehicles as well as special disaster control equipment. Their training takes place mainly on site and is supplemented by courses at the professional fire department.

This combination of volunteer and full-time personnel ensures round-the-clock protection in Mainz – reliably, competently, and locally.
