Welcome to the Ebersheim district
The largest wine-growing area in Mainz can be found here. On this page, we introduce you to the district that paves the way to Rheinhessen and offer practical links for life in Ebersheim - from the children's town map, events, day care centers and senior citizens' guide to the local administration.
District portrait
Ebersheim – the gateway to Rheinhessen – is the district with the largest wine-growing area in Mainz. Its vineyards, which extend into the valley between Harxheim, Mommenheim, and Zornheim, guarantee excellent wine quality.
If you want to see for yourself, the best way to taste these fine wines is on the wine hike on Pentecost Sunday.
And there is something else that literally sets Ebersheim apart from the other districts: the highest point in Mainz is the 245-meter-high area known as "Auf der Muhl" in the Ebersheim district. Another special feature is that Ebersheim is also the district furthest away from Mainz city center, at a distance of twelve kilometers.
In 1969, the residents of Ebersheim were given the choice between belonging to Mainz or Nieder-Olm. Considering the advantages for the infrastructure of the small town, they decided in favor of Mainz. Ebersheim was thus the only one of the six municipalities that voluntarily joined Mainz at that time. One positive consequence of the incorporation is, for example, the city bus connection.
The townscape of Mainz's youngest district is characterized by numerous new development areas. Living and feeling good could be a description of Ebersheim. Its proximity to the city in the midst of nature offers young families in particular an ideal home.
Even though Ebersheim has grown considerably as a district of Mainz over the decades, the village character of the old town center has been preserved. The Catholic tradition of the village is reflected in the Ebersheim coat of arms, which depicts the glowing gridiron on which St. Lawrence, the patron saint of Ebersheim, was martyred.
Community is very important in Ebersheim. The lively club scene offers a wide range of activities, from cycling and music to horse riding and, of course, carnival. Throughout the year, Ebersheim's colorful and diverse program of events has something for everyone and makes the "town village" particularly interesting for new residents.
