The figures speak for themselves: Mainz is a student-oriented city and a popular place to study. With around 35,100 students, Johannes Gutenberg University is one of the ten largest universities in Germany. Its wide range of courses is ideally complemented by the two universities of applied sciences, which have a further 5,000 students enrolled, with a focus on nursing and social services as well as technology, design, and economics.

However, these almost 40,000 young people don't just study, they also live, shop, enjoy themselves in bars, cafés, and clubs, visit museums, and launch creative projects. But what do we actually know about the living conditions of this important population group? Not very much, as Prof. Günter Meyer from the Geography Department at Mainz University and his student Evelyn Schäfer discovered.

To find out more about students in Mainz, they conducted an online survey at all three universities in collaboration with the Office for Urban Development as part of "City of Science 2011." 4,806 students provided insights into their living situation and finances and expressed their opinions on the attractiveness of Mainz as a city and place to study. The results have been available since the end of 2011. You can find them below in three parts.
