Theme year 2016: People and medicine
In the 21st century, medicine faces enormous challenges that affect us all. This was a good reason to choose "People and Medicine" as the theme for 2016.
People and medicine in Mainz
When you think of medical research in Mainz, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. And, of course, the University Medical Center is represented with many program items in 2016!
But numerous research companies in and around Mainz are also directly involved in medicine or have interfaces with it – such as BioNTech, Boehringer Ingelheim, the Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM, and GENterprise.
In addition, there are research institutes such as the Institute for Molecular Biology, the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, and TRON. Findings and developments from the universities of Mainz and Bingen are also being used in the medical field.
What is perhaps less obvious is that institutions in the humanities and social sciences also deal with the subject of medicine—such as the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz, the Leibniz Institute for European History, and the Roman-Germanic Central Museum. They shed light on the ethical and historical perspectives of the subject, for example.
Exciting questions—and answers, of course—as well as many events to discuss, experience, participate in, and contribute to awaited you during the theme year "People and Medicine"! You could find out more about this on this website, on Facebook under #wissenimherzen, on advertising columns, on postcards, and, of course, at the science events organized by the MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ.
Program highlights
Highlights included the Knowledge in Your Heart scavenger hunt in June, the MAINZ SCIENCE MARKET on September 10 and 11, 2016, and the medical Science Slam on October 28, 2016, at (opens in a new tab) the Frankfurter Hof.
And it will continue in 2017 – with people and the environment. Stay curious!
