Goldener Hirsch - Palatinate cuisine in a cool ambience

Note: An article from mainzMAGAZIN Spring/Summer 2019

A plate is being prepared

Traditional German cuisine with a personal touch—that's the Goldene Hirsch in Mainz's Neustadt district. The family restaurant exudes pure individuality, not only thanks to its Palatinate family tradition—owner Nora Benks makes sure of that.

Nora Benks

She has been running the restaurant on her own since 2015, incorporating all her talents. And they are many. She owes her passion for cooking and her sense of shared enjoyment to her Palatinate roots—she comes from a family of foresters and gardeners. As a trained nutritionist, she also brings her health knowledge to bear in the creation of her dishes. But that's not all: as a graphic designer, she took it upon herself to design the entire interior and décor, without the help of an architect or advertising agency. The choice of name is the crowning glory: "With 'Goldener Hirsch' (Golden Stag), I wanted to establish a connection to traditional German gastronomy, but also reflect my origins with a wink," says Benks, explaining the idea behind it.

As unique as the name is, the cuisine has more to offer than just the classic venison ragout found on the menu. Game dishes with a regional connection, recipes from grandmother's Palatinate kitchen, but also modern interpretations, vegetarian and vegan dishes are served. "The concept offers traditional cuisine that is anything but 'dusty'," explains Benks. At the 'Goldener Hirsch', regional producers and seasonal dishes meet in a design-oriented ambience. In addition to a regular menu, there are seasonal dishes inspired by the seasons.

For those who don't want to miss out on the restaurant's delicious food at their next family celebration, the team offers catering services. And if you want to have the Goldener Hirsch all to yourself, you can also rent the premises.
