Mainz Mini Press Archive
History and tasks of the Mainz Mini Press Archive
The Mainz Minipressen Archive (MMPA) has existed in its current form since 1980 and is affiliated with the Gutenberg Museum.
The original task of the MMP Archive is to collect literary works from small and micro-printers and publishers, also known as mini-presses, whose products have historically been difficult to find in public libraries and archives. Either the small print runs were not known at all, or they were ignored as "alternative literature."
Since 1970, these small and micro-printers and publishers have been coming together every two years at the Mainz Minipressen-Messe (MMPM)/International Book Fair for Small Publishers and Artistic Hand Presses, an event in which the MMP Archive plays a major role. The initiator and first organizer of the fair was Norbert Kubatzki, a small publisher from Mainz.
With around 250 small publishers exhibiting and an average of 10,000 visitors, the MMPM has become the largest book fair for small publishers in Europe. It has thus become a hub for the latest ideas and trends in printing and publishing literature and art.
Some of the books and magazines exhibited by the mini-presses are transferred to the MMPA after the fair, as a token of gratitude for the low-cost exhibition opportunity. The MMPA's collection was largely built up through these donations. In addition, there is the collection of press prints and illustrated books by Herbert Gutsch (Handpresse Gutsch, Berlin), the complete magazine collection of the "U-Archives" (Hamburg Underground Archives), the literary magazine collection of Günther Emig (editor of the "Verzeichnis deutschsprachiger Literaturzeitschriften" VdL), the alternative magazines of Udo Pasterny (editor of the "Bibliographie der Gegenkultur"), the alternative magazine collection of Hadayat-Ullah PG Hübsch, and many newer literary and cultural magazines published by small publishers.
For users, the MMPA is a unique collection of books (approx. 6,000), magazines (approx. 1,500 titles in 16,000 issues), press prints (approx. 200), videos (approx. 30), sound recordings (approx. 200), posters (approx. 500), flyers (approx. 1,000), brochures from small publishers (approx. 30,000), and addresses of small publishers (approx. 3,000), thus providing a good overview of their production in German-speaking countries. It provides a good impression of the emergence and work of mini-presses, and the archive offers initial assistance in self-publishing one's own works or founding one's own publishing house through discussions, seminars, and further reading.
In addition, the MMPA also administers the V.O. Stomps Prize of the state capital of Mainz. The small publisher, writer, and literary promoter Victor Otto Stomps undertook publishing ventures that others did not have the courage to undertake, thus becoming a role model for many small publishers in the postwar period. In his memory, the city of Mainz awards a prize every two years for outstanding achievements in small-scale publishing. It is endowed with 3,500 euros. In addition, the city awards the V.O. Stomps Sponsorship Prize, which is endowed with 1,500 euros. Applications for this prize are accepted on an ongoing basis.
A jury selects the winners four months before the respective Minipressen Fair, and the prizes are awarded at its opening. Minipressen Fairs always take place in odd-numbered years, usually opening on Ascension Day and lasting until the following Sunday.

Gutenberg Library
The Gutenberg Library is a specialist library covering the entire field of book, printing, and writing history. It comprises around 80,000 volumes and periodicals. As a reference library, it makes its holdings available in the reading room, which is open to all interested parties free of charge. Most of the holdings are stored in magazines. There is a reference library in the reading room. Part of the collection is on permanent or temporary display in the museum.
The library is divided into the sections "Incunabula Collection," "Exhibition Pieces," and "Specialized Literature":
The incunabula collection, mainly on loan from the Mainz City Library, comprises over 4,000 titles and is listed in a separate catalog. In addition to specialist literature, a microfiche edition of the most important incunabula from significant collections is also available for this subject area.
The exhibition pieces include a wide variety of printed works, each of which is typical of its time and historically significant or particularly noteworthy for its artistic quality. This collection is indexed both by an alphabetical cross-catalog with numerous references and by
a chronologically ordered catalog. German and foreign press prints, bibliophile series, and house and private prints are also cataloged separately.
The specialist literature, which covers the entire field of printing and writing history and is unique in terms of its type and scope, is used on an ongoing basis by schoolchildren, students, academics, and other interested parties. It is cataloged in a systematic manner in various alphabetical catalogs, some of which have been created using IT.
The library's book collection also includes the "Hettler" (bookbinding) and "Mori" (type foundry) collections, as well as the separately cataloged Minipressen archive, which is housed
in a separate department. The collection of type specimens and the exceptionally extensive collection of bookplates are also of great importance.
We look forward to your visit.
