The Mainz small publishers archive

The Mainzer Minipressen-Archiv (MMPA – Mainz small publishers archive) is a section of the Gutenberg Museum containing Germany's only collection of print products by small and miniature publishers. The extensive contents of the archive include around 6,000 books, 2,000 newspapers, 1,000 flyers, and 30,000 publisher's brochures, along with fine press prints, audio carries, videos, and addresses of small publishers. Every two years, the MMPA organizes the Mainzer Minipressen Messe (MMPM – Mainz book fair for small publishers), a general public trade fair for small publishers with participants from across Europe.

History

The Mainz small publishers archive was established in 1980 with the mission of collecting the work of small publishers that are rarely included in public libraries and archives. Initiated by the publisher Norbert Kubatzki (1938-1985) of Mainz, these small publishers and miniature printers have been meeting every two years since 1970 at the MMPM. In 1986, the MMPA at the Gutenberg Museum assumed charge of organizing the international book fair of small publishers and fine press printers. Some of the books and newspapers exhibited at the fair are subsequently added to the collection of the archive.

Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" The publisher and writer Victor Otto Stomps (1897-1970) established three publishing houses that were influential in the development of German literature in the 20th century: "Die Rabenpresse" (1926-37), "Die Eremitenpresse" (1949-67), and "Neue Rabenpresse" (1967-69). With the "Streit-Zeit-Schrift" Stomps showed publishing courage and a literary sense that had a lasting effect on the young literature scene in post-war Germany. Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" Rainer Pretzell (*1939) worked from 1964-65 for Victor Otto Stomps' "Eremitenpresse" until he established the RAINER publishing house in 1965. Subsequently, he published many works of major writers, such as H.C. Artmann and Oskar Pastior in small, elaborately designed editions. These include Artmann's "Drakula Drakula" (1966) and Pastior's "An die Neue Aubergine" (1976).

Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" The publisher Dieter Wagner (1941-2004) worked from the 1970s in the leftist publishing sector of West Berlin and from 1979 as an offset typesetter at the Gerike printing press. Next to classical publications, his publishing projects also included book objects that are a mixture of poetry, object art, and book art. In "Berlin 22.9.81" he collected poems and paroles related to the death of Klaus Jürgen Rattay, a squatter who was killed during a police operation in 1981.

Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" The art magazine "PIPS", published by Claudia Puetz (*1958) starting in 1986, transgresses media boundaries and combines literature, original graphic art, discoveries and art objects in unique object collages. Initially created with the format of a conventional Dada magazine, PIPS quickly developed into a forum for experimental literature, mail art, visual poetry, and book art. The Mainz small publishers archive contains an almost complete set of all issues.

Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" "Gasolin 23" was a German-language magazine for Beat, Alternative and Cut Up literature that was published from 1973 to 1986, sometimes at irregular intervals. A joint publication and collaboration of Carl Weissner (1940-2012), Jörg Fauser (1944-1987), and Jürgen Ploog (*1935), the magazine soon developed into an important organ of Alternative and Cut-Up literature.

Bildergalerie Gutenberg-Museum "MMPA" With the establishment of the magazine "BENZIN“ and the publication of his poetry collection "Sperrsitz“, Jürgen Theobaldy (*1944) became a representative of a lyric poetry that has been simultaneously lauded and criticized by literature critics since the mid-1970s as the "new sensuality," first for West German Alternative literature and later for literature in general.
