Welcome to the Wild Worlds!

Wild worlds of prehistoric times

The book accompanying the exhibition

Expedition through the history of the earth

What did the world look like in earlier times? This book invites families on a journey through the history of the Earth! Readers experience in a nutshell how our state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a small area on our planet, has changed over time.

The journey through time

  • begins 400 million years ago in the tropical depths of the Devonian Sea,
  • stops off at giant salamanders in desert-like landscapes,
  • visits the sea cow of the Mainz Basin,
  • stops at the crater lake to see the primitive horses,
  • passes the clawed animals and bear dogs in the floodplain forests of the primeval Rhine, and finally ends in the current ice age!

It is hard to imagine that all these scenarios took place in one and the same place – just at different times. These reconstructed worlds are based on fossils and rocks from the internationally renowned collections of the Natural History Museum in Mainz with its affiliated State Collection for Natural History RLP.

Over 250 illustrations and drawings, informative texts, and small interactive elements guide you through exciting prehistoric worlds.

Of course, you can get the book from us at the museum and from well-known online platforms.
