The Natural History Museum is the largest natural history museum in Rhineland-Palatinate. Originating from the collections of the Rhenish Natural History Society, the nhm was opened as a municipal museum in the former monastery church of the Poor Clares. The scientific collections quickly gained national fame and attention. Unfortunately, part of the large collection was lost during World War II. It was not until 1962 that it was possible to reopen the museum to visitors. In 1988, the Rhineland-Palatinate State Collection of Natural History was founded. This marked the beginning of the systematic development of what has since become an important regional research infrastructure for the biological and geosciences at this institution. In 2019, there was a grand reopening with the presentation of the new permanent exhibition featuring a geological tour.

The Natural History Museum Mainz is an extracurricular and extra-university learning center, a hub for ecological education, and a showcase for the sciences. As a cosmopolitan institution, it is a place of encounter, understanding, and integration.
