Historical daily newspapers are mainly available on microfilm. These can be used on the microfilm scanner in the lending department. From there, you can print out the articles or save them to a USB stick. There is no index, so you should have a rough idea of when an article was published.
An appointment must be made to use the microfilm scanner. Please make a reservation by calling +49 6131 12-2652 or sending an email to stb.ausleihestadt.mainzde. The device is available: Mon and Wed 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Fri 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can also register by phone during these times. If you would like to know immediately whether your desired appointment time is available, we recommend that you call.
Some titles from Mainz daily newspapers from the period 1850-1920 have been digitized and can be found at www.dilibri.de.
What do I have to bear in mind when handling older books (printed before 1900)?
Books printed before 1900 may only be used in the reading room of the city library.
Since pigments containing heavy metals were sometimes used to color book edges and covers until the 19th century, we recommend wearing gloves when handling books printed before 1900. We will provide gloves upon request.
Can I print, copy and scan in the library?
In the lending department and reading room, you can print from the Internet using the library computers. The library staff will provide you with printouts for €0.10 each. Please note that no word processing program is available and that it is not possible to save files to USB sticks.
A scanner is available in the library foyer. You can make printouts (€0.10 per page) and scans to save on USB sticks (free of charge).
The microfilm scanner in the lending department offers the option of making printouts and saving files to USB sticks. Printouts cost €0.30 per DIN A4 page and €0.60 per DIN A3 page. Scans are free of charge.
Can I order scans of media?
We offer reproductions (scans or copies) on request (subject to a fee). You can find more information here.
The City Library only accepts gifts if they fit its collection profile and thus meaningfully supplement its media holdings. The collection profile includes: 1. Regional items from and about Mainz and Rheinhessen, 2. Research literature on working with our old and special collections. The media must also be in good condition.
If you would like to offer us a donation, please always contact us in advance by email at stb.infostadt.mainzde.
Duplicates are generally not accepted. Therefore, we require a list of the books intended for donation so that we can compare them with the library catalog.
