Notes for the world

July 16 to January 9, 2022

About the exhibition

The new special exhibition focuses on high-caliber loans, including items from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the Bavarian State Library in Munich, as well as highlights from the archives of Schott Music and the museum's collection. "The exhibits reflect the milestones of European music history as well as important stages in the history of notation," says curator Prof. Dr. Maria Linsmann-Dege. The special exhibition provides an overview of important stages in the 250-year history of Schott Music, which was founded in Mainz in 1770 by Bernhard Schott and is now considered one of the oldest and most traditional music publishers in the world. "It is particularly important to us to honor this magnificent anniversary," says Dr. Annette Ludwig, director of the Gutenberg Museum. Visitors can look forward to the highlight of the exhibition, the original score of Richard Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" from 1866/67, on loan from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The Gutenberg Museum also offers audio samples for selected exhibits in the special exhibition, promising that the exhibition will be not only a feast for the eyes but also a treat for the ears.
