Children, accompanied by their parents, can invite their birthday guests (ages 6 and up) to the print shop. Under expert guidance, they will set type using wooden letters and print in multiple colors on old hand presses. A birthday poster will be typeset and printed for the birthday child as a keepsake. In the run-up to the birthday, invitations for the party can also be typeset and printed at the print shop (costs available upon request). 

The activity is led by two staff members from the print shop.

Particularly suitable for school groups: The workshop focuses on giving students hands-on experience with the basic principles of manual typesetting and its application in letterpress printing. Gutenberg’s printing technique is brought to life using wooden letters, and participants also have the opportunity to print multi-color blocks featuring a variety of designs on our printing presses.

This program is supplemented by another printing technique, frottage (a rubbing technique). The experience is rounded out by a scavenger hunt exploring Gutenberg’s life and work in Mainz.

Please note that the school class will be divided into two groups, which will take turns (1.5 hours each) participating in the scavenger hunt and the hands-on printing activity in the print shop.

The artwork created during the workshop can be picked up the following day (Monday through Friday) at the print shop. Shipping costs to Germany are €11.00; to other European countries, between €24.00 and €70.00.

One-hour guided tour of the permanent exhibition with a printing demonstration on the reconstructed Gutenberg press and, on request, with different focal points.
