The floods of 1882 and 1988

A sign on the flooded banks of the Rhine.

You're not allowed in here: If only it were that easy to banish the Rhine from the city center during floods... Nowadays, the battle against the floods is precisely timed, a mixture of brainpower, muscle power, and high-tech, and almost always successful.

Things used to be a little different. Because the technical possibilities were different. But also because the water levels rose particularly high. In 1988, for example, 7.70 meters were measured. And during the so-called flood of the century in 1882, it was even 7.95 meters.

You can see here what that meant for Mainz city center.
