Keeping your home dry: heavy rain prevention in Mainz
Joint task of heavy rain prevention
If more rain falls in a very short period of time than can drain away underground through the sewer system, flooding can occur even far away from large bodies of water. What makes this particularly treacherous is that the exact location and time of such heavy rainfall events are almost impossible to predict.
This makes prevention essential! In public areas, Mainz Public Utilities implements measures on behalf of the city of Mainz and keeps the sewer system and waterways in good condition at all times.
On private property, the respective owners are responsible – but they also receive support from Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz in the form of heavy rainfall concepts for individual districts as well as tailored advice and information.

Heavy rain prevention concepts for the Mainz districts
In 2023, Mainz Economic Development Agency, on behalf of the city and with funding from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, and Mobility, began developing heavy rain concepts for individual city districts.
To this end, we are working with the respective local councilors and advisory boards to identify potential sources of danger. Based on the results, measures are being developed to determine how and where water can be drained to minimize damage.
Before they are finalized, the heavy rain concepts will be presented at town hall meetings in the respective districts and discussed with residents. The finalized heavy rain concepts will then be available for download free of charge on our website and will be presented at the Mainz Environmental Store.
The project began with Ebersheim and Finthen, and the districts of Drais, Hechtsheim, and Marienborn will follow in 2026.
