German Debating Championship 2015
Mainz is debating champion
The final of the 2015 German-language debating championship in Münster was a lively affair. Over 150 participants from 51 student debating clubs in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland competed on topics from politics, economics, and culture. The speakers only learned the debate topic and whether they would be assigned to the pro or con side immediately before the start. After seven preliminary rounds, a quarter-final and a semi-final, it was clear: Mainz had made it to the final.
The finalists engaged in a "verbal" contest on the topic "When there are indications of a threat to large events or concrete threats, administrative bodies usually ban the event. Should large events no longer be banned in such cases if the participants are informed of the threat before the event begins?"
Christian Strunck, Sina Strupp, and Nicolas Eberle (team "The Good, the Bad and the Beauty") won the German championship title for the DCJG. This is the DCJG's third victory in a German championship after 2003 and 2007. The Mainz University Debating Club can now rightly call itself the German record champion.
Every year, the championship is the highlight of the renowned ZEIT DEBATTEN tournament series, which is held under the patronage of former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and with the support of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT.
