Study program "Studying 50 Plus"
Program for the winter semester 2015/2016
The structured study program "Studying 50 Plus" for older people has been a permanent fixture at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) for 28 semesters now.
"Studying 50 Plus" is primarily aimed at people who have retired from active working life, who have finished raising their children, or who are in transition to the so-called "third phase of life." With this program, the university is responding to the steadily increasing demand for academic continuing education for these target groups.
The Center for Continuing Education (ZWW) at JGU is offering around 70 attractive courses in a wide range of subject areas in the 2015/16 winter semester.
New events
The coming winter semester will see the launch of "Studying 50 Plus" with a wide range of new events. In his seminar, economist Prof. em. Dr. Karlhans Sauernheimer will address the question "Euro – Quo vadis." In
addition, experts from the German Resilience Center in Mainz will answer the question "What makes us resilient to stress and mental illness?" and examine the topic from various perspectives in a seminar of the same name.
Participants can get actively involved in the block seminars offered by the Larissa working group at the Institute of Physics: First, they will learn about the physical principles of RFID systems and holography, and then they will have the opportunity to conduct small experiments themselves under supervision. In addition, there are once again numerous offerings in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences and in the field of languages in cooperation with the Foreign Language Center (FSZ) at JGU.
Course type and costs
The seminars are offered in the form of weekly events, block seminars, or excursions. Interested parties can book individual courses (between €25 and €140 per semester) or the entire study program (€500). Senior students do not necessarily need to have a high school diploma to participate in the events.
Guest auditor studies
Another option for those who have developed a taste for studying is guest student status. Anyone can register as a guest student for regular lectures and seminars in all departments, colleges, and institutions at JGU. The cost ranges from €120 to €250, depending on the number of hours per week booked for the semester. The 2015/2016 winter semester begins on October 19, 2015, and registrations are open until September 25, 2015.
