JGU is the only German university of its size to have almost all of its institutes located on a campus close to the city center, which also houses partner institutes for cutting-edge non-university research, including the Max Planck Institutes for Chemistry and Polymer Research, the Helmholtz Institute Mainz, and the Institute for Molecular Biology. Student residences and childcare facilities are also located on campus. The clinical and clinical-theoretical facilities of the University Medical Center are only about one kilometer away.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz offers students a wide range of study programs. As a comprehensive university, it brings together almost all academic disciplines, including Mainz University Medical Center and two art colleges, under one roof—an integration that is unique in the German higher education landscape. The Department of Translation, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies, based in Germersheim, trains translators and interpreters in numerous European and non-European languages.

This diversity of subjects ensures interdisciplinary research and teaching and—in keeping with the spirit of Johannes Gutenberg, after whom the university is named—an innovative approach to new ideas and technologies.
