Certain smells evoke powerful memories in us. These can date back to our earliest childhood: sometimes we not only see images, but also feel exactly as we did back then.
The “Mainz Scent Map,” developed by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, now harnesses this psychological effect. The scent map lets you experience Mainz through your sense of smell. Five characteristic scents—from wine to doughnuts—represent the city’s history, culture, and everyday moments. Each scent tells a story, evokes memories, and shapes how we perceive Mainz. As you scratch, smell, and click through, a new perspective on the city emerges—scent by scent.
The five scents on the map:
Wine – What does Rheinhessen smell like in a glass?
Mainz Cathedral – wood, incense, 1,000 years of city history.
Mainz’s book tradition – the scent of time preserved.
Kreppel – The sweet scent of street carnival.
Mainz Rose Garden – Home of the violet Mainz Carnival Rose and many other rose scents.
Find out how the scents made it onto the card and how the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry plans to digitize many more scents in the future on the back of the card.
