The pilot project in the courtyard of Forsterstraße 32-38 was developed as a joint initiative between the "Social City" neighborhood management program, the Parks and Environment Department, and the BUND environmental organization.

Part of the green space in the courtyard of the apartment buildings has been transformed into a 400 m² garden area, which is now maintained almost entirely by the residents themselves.

The area, formerly just lawn, is now lushly filled with vegetables, herbs, fruit, and flowers. This variety of plants, along with the hanging nesting boxes and insect hotels, encourages the local wildlife and also attracts many new residents.

The community garden on Romano-Guardini-Platz was created as part of the "Mainz bekennt Farbe" (Mainz shows its colors) project. In collaboration with the job center, vegetables, fruit, and herbs are grown here, which citizens are allowed and encouraged to harvest.

The city of Mainz provides the plants, soil, and water. A permanent group from the "Lernen und Fördern" (Learn and Support) project plants and tends to the plants, waters them, removes weeds, and also keeps the paths and open spaces weed-free.

Large wooden raised beds were built here by the community, surrounded by seating areas that are popular during lunch breaks, bringing the space to life and making it a place to enjoy. Residents can harvest, snack, or simply take in the view.
