"Weird birds" stand up for animals in the city park
Bird enclosures
Mainz Zoo comprises the bird enclosures in Mainz City Park and Mainz-Gonsenheim Wildlife ParkPark.
Integrated into the city park in Mainz's Oberstadt district are an aviary and a flamingo pond. Both facilities were built in 1960 with a total size of 1,500 m² and have been a magnet for park visitors ever since.
The aviary is home to zebra finches, rice finches, canaries, silverbill finches, and diamond doves. The main attraction of the aviary is a pair of yellow-breasted parrots.
The aviary is partially glazed and equipped with several outdoor aviaries. The aviary is accessible, so that the animals can also be observed from the inside. Around 10 species of birds and approximately 100 animals live in the old aviaries at the transition to the public park.
The flamingo pond consists of a large pond, a feeding area, and the flamingo house.
In the immediate vicinity of the bird house is the rose garden, which is also of interest to visitors.
