Rheinhessen
Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, is located southwest of Mainz. The extensive vineyards and romantic wine-growing villages can be explored on foot or by bike. All locations can be easily reached by train or car in less than an hour. In summer, many wineries offer their wines and small meals on their farms, known as "Straußwirtschaften" (wine taverns). Before the new harvest, numerous wine festivals attract visitors with the last drops of the previous year's vintage. You can enjoy a view of Rheinhessen on a leisurely ride on the regional train from Mainz to Alzey and back!
