Mombacher Unterfeld
A walk through the "Mombacher Unterfeld" reveals special animal and plant species. In this floodplain location of woodlands and grasslands, it is particularly important to be considerate of nature.
The "Mombacher Unterfeld" is known as a species-rich grassland with typical floodplain biotopes. The area extends west of the A 643 motorway, between the Mombacher Rheinufer nature reserve and the new winter dike. Wet and marshy meadows can be found here near the river. This area is characterized by a high groundwater level that changes throughout the year.
The meadows in Mombacher Unterfeld are important feeding grounds for storks and other animal species.
The area between the dams is also an important habitat for bats and amphibians.
For this reason, grassland has been restored and preserved in this area for years. This is achieved through nature conservation compensation areas, the purchase of former garden plots, and the leasing of suitable land. Volunteers from the Mombach Environmental Working Group and NABU Mainz also participate in planting campaigns and other on-site work activities. Anyone else interested in helping to preserve this protected biotope is welcome to join. Camping and overnight stays are prohibited here. During walks, visitors can explore the local flora and fauna more closely. A sign at the old pump house also provides information about nature conservation in the area.
