Weisenau quarry
For many years, the Weisenau quarry was used to extract limestone for cement production. The area is now undergoing renaturation and serves as a local recreation area. Paths have been laid out, trees and shrubs planted, biotopes created, benches and litter bins installed, and safety and information boards erected. After more than 150 years of limestone quarrying, the quarry has been given a new purpose: nature and people. The Weisenau quarry site has gradually been given a completely new look – from an industrial area to a new destination for excursions, offering interesting information about geology, geological development, the economic use of limestone as a raw material, and the current flora and fauna.
Admission is via the new entrances from Höhenweg. Please follow the signs. As parking spaces are limited, visitors are requested to use public transportation.
GeoPath Weisenau
The Weisenau GeoPath was opened in May 2011. The path is one of the flagship projects of "Mainz – City of Science 2011." It invites visitors to take an informative walk through the quarry. Twelve information boards provide information about the rocks of the Tertiary period in the Mainz Basin and the history of limestone quarrying and cement production in the former cement plant of HeidelbergCement AG.
You can reach the Weisenau GeoPath via Wormser Straße at the pedestrian bridge in front of the former quarry site.
