FILMZ - Festival of German Cinema

FILMZ brings festival flair to Mainz every year in November! The state capital then becomes a stage for German film culture. Current German-language productions of various lengths are shown at different locations.

Tradition for 24 years

As the first feature film festival in Rhineland-Palatinate, FILMZ – Festival of German Cinema has been presenting current German-language productions from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland every year for 24 years.

The main venue for the festival is the Capitol. The FILMZ festival center is located in the LUX Pavilion at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.

The competitions in the film sections form the core of the festival:

  • Feature film
  • Medium-length film
  • Documentary film competition
  • Short film

In addition, the state capital of Mainz awards a special prize for outstanding achievements in film.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Media Promotion Special Prize will also be awarded for the first time.

Organizer

Since its inception in 2001, FILMZ has been a purely volunteer-organized festival and therefore thrives on the hard work of its staff and helpers. Since 2009, the state capital of Mainz has been the official organizer of the festival, with the association behind FILMZ, FILMZ e.V., acting as the host.

In addition to the state capital of Mainz and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the festival is also made possible by a large number of committed cooperation partners who help organize FILMZ – Festival of German Cinema in Mainz.
