Gutenberg Scholarship - Promotion of education and teaching

Since 1946, the state capital of Mainz has endowed the Gutenberg Scholarship to promote education and teaching at Mainz universities.

The Gutenberg Scholarships are awarded as a contribution to promoting academic education at Mainz's universities and express the city's connection to Mainz's universities. The Gutenberg Scholarships recognize completed academic theses that represent outstanding academic, artistic, or professional achievement and are thematically related to the state capital of Mainz.

On November 5, 2025, the state capital of Mainz, together with Mainz's universities, awarded the 79th Gutenberg Scholarships.

Five outstanding master's and bachelor's theses were presented from the fields of geoinformation and surveying, communication design, interior design, chemistry, pharmacy, geography, geoscience, and fine arts and art education:

For their bachelor's thesis "Mainz Underworlds – 3D Measurement and Visualization of the Underground Counterescarp Passage at Fort Josef" in the "Geoinformatics and Surveying" program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Jan Hechtelberger and Tobias Altmaier examined, measured, and documented the historic Fort Josef and its preserved structures. The aim is to create a precise 3D record of the underground passage and the terrain above it, including Czerny Street, sidewalks, and the escarpment wall.

The project "Hearing the Rhine: River Kilometer 497.5," which Stella Eckhardt presented as part of her master's thesis in the "Communication Design" department at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, examines the significance of the Rhine in Mainz as a geographical, cultural, and social link and develops new forms of science communication. Surveys show that there is great interest in topics such as water quality, ecosystems, and climate change, but that there is a lack of information available.

Mareen Ohrt's bachelor's thesis in the Department of Interior Design at Mainz University of Applied Sciences is an architectural statement on urban development in Mainz and focuses on the visibility of women in art and culture: The project "Matriarchy Mainz: Art and Culture by Women for Women" reimagines the Allianz House as a cultural venue, focusing on female perspectives, promotion, and participation, thus presenting a counter-model to patriarchal structures.

In his master's thesis "Application of the sponge principle – A GIS-based analysis and planning of blue-green infrastructure to mitigate the risk of heavy rainfall in the city of Mainz" in the "Climate and Environmental Trade" program at JGU, Dakovic addresses the increasingly frequent heavy and prolonged rainfall in Germany caused by man-made climate change. Mainz is considered particularly at risk because the city is growing rapidly, is densely built-up, and has few green spaces.

Viviane Feitner, a master's student at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts, examined the relationship between humans and nature in urban spaces using the example of the city pigeon in her "work report." Inspired by the Mainz/Wiesbaden City Pigeon Aid Association, the master's/diploma exhibition addresses the (sometimes poor) treatment of animals, social coexistence, and the role of humans in our ecosystem.

The PCK provided musical entertainment for the evening. Following the award ceremony, there was a small reception and an opportunity to chat with each other in a relaxed atmosphere.
