Historical Mainz
Here you will find an illustrated book on the city's history as reflected in buildings, monuments and squares.
The city of Mainz can look back on a rich but also eventful 2,000-year history, which is reflected in many historically significant and culturally valuable buildings, monuments, and squares. In order to commemorate the city's history and make it visible, information boards have been installed at 230 locations over the past 25 years as part of the "Historical Mainz" series. Complementing the on-site signage system, the illustrated book "Historical Mainz" provides a comprehensive overview of Mainz in earlier times.
The authors Hartmut Fischer and Elke Höllein have compiled a selection of 85 particularly striking stone witnesses to history – arranged by era – for this book. At the same time, the individual buildings are described in an excellent manner, including their origins and their fate over the course of time. Photographs of striking details show views and unusual perspectives of the buildings, squares, and monuments. An article on the city's history by Dr. Matthias Dietz-Lenssen and an enclosed overview map of the objects depicted round off the book.
The large-format illustrated book was published jointly by Stefan Schmitz and the state capital of Mainz and is available from Verlag Bonewitz.
