The senior safety advisors in Mainz are there to help older people as expert contacts. They help them spot dangers early on, give tips on how to protect themselves from fraud, and act as a link between seniors, the police, and the city government, helping to make life safer and better for older folks.
Older people are more likely to fall victim to (online) fraud, trick theft, or dubious door-to-door sales in everyday life. They often tend to be more trusting, more helpful, or live alone, which perpetrators deliberately exploit.
The Municipal Prevention Council (KPR), together with the Mainz Police Headquarters, therefore trains senior citizens as senior safety advisors who provide helpful support through tips and close contact with the local community, thereby increasing the subjective sense of safety among older citizens in Mainz.
The selected individuals are free to plan their activities as senior safety advisors at their own discretion, on their own responsibility, and independently.
The senior safety advisors are trained to: recognize
potential dangers among those seeking advice, provide
specific recommendations on how to behave, and establish rapid contact with the
relevant city administration or police departments in specific dangerous situations.
