Aircraft noise - Mainz fights back
Political leaders in the state capital were already aware as early as 2000 that the expansion of Frankfurt Airport would lead to a catastrophic increase in aircraft noise even in the Mainz metropolitan area.

Municipal Working Group Future Rhine-Main (KAGZRM)
The Municipal Working Group for the Future of the Rhine-Main Region (KAGZRM) is an alliance of 32 cities and municipalities and 4 counties in the Rhine-Main region, as well as BUND Hesse, which opposes the planned expansion of Frankfurt Airport. The state capital, Mainz, is a member of this initiative.
The KAGZRM was formed in November 2023 through the merger of the Municipal Working Group on Frankfurt/Main Airport (KAG), founded in 1990, and the Future Rhine-Main Initiative (ZRM), founded in 2000. The city of Mainz had already been an active member of both municipal associations since 2000.
The KAGZRM sees itself as a municipal counterweight to companies in the aviation industry. The overarching goal of the KAGZRM is to shape air traffic in a way that is quieter, more socially responsible, and more climate-friendly, in order to better protect the health of the local population, support climate and environmental protection, and preserve a region worth living in.
