Urban design
Our goals:
- Align urban design with Mainz's distinctive identity.
- Further develop the diverse approaches typical of Mainz, which have evolved from its 2,000-year history, its historically grown cityscape, and its current functions: Mainz at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers, Roman Mainz, Gutenberg and media city, university and student city, state capital, cathedral city, ecclesiastical center, carnival stronghold, and important wine city.
- New design elements and architecture should be based on the quality of the historically grown cityscape.
- Residents and visitors should feel at home in Mainz, and Mainz residents should identify with their city.
- Strengthen the multifunctional character of the city center.
- Preserve the functional diversity of shopping, living, working, and experiencing.
- Promote the social experience space.
- Design inviting spaces with infrastructure offerings such as meeting places, cultural and leisure opportunities, and play and activity areas for the various user groups.
- Promote concentration and connectivity in the city center.
- Counteract the spatial fragmentation of the city center and ensure more concentrated further development.
- Strive for a more attractive connection between the various locations (inner-city square system, merging of different functional areas such as retail, recreation, and leisure areas).
- Improve the quality of stay.
- Create urban spaces that invite people to stroll, linger, and relax.
- Pay particular attention to cleanliness and safety.
- Improve the design of pedestrian areas and the banks of the Rhine.
