Energy and climate protection
More than 35 billion tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide are emitted worldwide every year, and emissions are still rising.
This has resulted in a significant increase in the CO2 content of the atmosphere since industrialization due to the associated consumption of fossil fuels. The consequence is an increase in the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. Heavy rainfall, flooding, and increasing storm frequency are also associated with climate change.
It is therefore necessary to implement measures to adapt to climate change and measures to counteract climate change. This primarily includes reducing emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) by reducing the use of fossil fuels.
The declared goal of the state capital Mainz is to become climate neutral. The 100% Climate Protection Master Plan and the Lerchenberg Energy Renovation Management Program are just a few examples of what the state capital Mainz is doing in this area. The Mainz Foundation for Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency provides sustainable funding for measures and projects. A total of €500,000 is available annually.
Everyone is talking about the energy transition – and Mainz is actively involved in putting this transition into practice. Rising energy prices and dwindling supplies of fossil fuels such as coal and oil underscore the need to take the principle of "think globally, act locally" seriously and to implement climate protection measures at the municipal level as well.
