Blue Atlas cedar

Blue Atlas cedar

The name says it all. As its name suggests, the Atlas cedar is mainly found in the Atlas Mountains of North-West Africa. Unlike Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca' captivates with the intense blue color of its needles, which shine particularly brightly immediately after sprouting.

Due to its origin in the Atlas Mountains at altitudes of 1,000 meters and above, where it can get very cold even in the African winter, it is also largely winter hardy in our latitudes. It is used in parks and larger gardens, especially in the southwestern parts of the country. It is undoubtedly one of the most attractive solitary conifers.

  • Origin: Northwest Africa
  • Growth height: up to 25 meters
  • Needles: silvery blue
  • Fruit: cones, shiny brown, cylindrical with a flat tip, January-March
  • Soil/location: sufficiently moist, well-drained soil, preferably calcareous, resistant to urban climate
