Gonsbach renaturation

Gonsbach renaturation

Between 2013 and 2015, the state capital of Mainz renaturalized the Gonsbach in the area between "Mainzer Straße and the Lungenberg retention basin". The aim was to achieve "good water status" as required by the European Water Framework Directive (EU WFD).

During the construction work, the existing concrete reinforcement was removed and a flat, unpaved stream bed with structurally rich bank zones, wetlands, and retention areas was created. The monotonous concrete channel has now been transformed into a near-natural watercourse that combines the interests of nature conservation and local recreation in equal measure.

In total, more than 30,000 m³ of soil material was moved along the 1,200 m long section of water. The costs of approximately €1.6 million were covered 60% by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Aktion Blau Plus) and 40% by AGEM Mainz (from nature conservation compensation funds).
