Mainzelmännchen traffic light
This only happens in Mainz! At a crosswalk between the train station and the city center, the clever Det lights up red and green, stands and walks. This is where you will find the first Mainzelmännchen traffic lights in Germany! In the meantime, more Mainzelmännchen traffic lights have been installed in the city and have become real eye-catchers and visitor magnets.
The idea of equipping a traffic light system in Mainz with images of the Mainzelmännchen instead of the usual traffic light figures first arose in August 2013. To mark their 50th birthday, the state capital of Mainz awarded Anton, Berti, Conni, Det, Edi, and Fritzchen the "Mainzelmännchen honorary title" in a humorous ceremony.
The idea gave rise to concrete plans to create a "monument" to the Mainzelmännchen with an external impact: the Mainzelmännchen traffic light project was born. Of course, this is not a standard product but a custom-made one. The then mayor Michael Ebling and ZDF director Dr. Thomas Bellut switched on the first of its kind together on November 23, 2016.
Location
The traffic light system with the red and green illuminated, standing and walking Mainzelmännchen Det is located at the busiest pedestrian crossing in the city center:
- Große Bleiche / Neubrunnenplatz, 55116 Mainz

Additional traffic lights featuring Mainz's popular figures can now be found in the Lerchenberg district, home to ZDF television. The pedestrian crossing on Rheinstraße (near Fischtorplatz) has also been featuring Mainz personalities since September 2017. Other traffic lights in the city center are being converted.
