The Iron Tower was restored in the 19th century after having lost its significance over the centuries.

The Iron Tower was built around 1240 as part of the medieval city fortifications. In the first half of the 15th century, the Romanesque base was raised. After it lost its function as a gate tower of the medieval city fortifications at the end of the 16th century, it was closely surrounded by houses.

The tower gets its distinctive shape from its slate-covered hipped roof and two short side extensions. The Romanesque archway on the Rhine side is a testament to the city's independence in the late Staufer period. It is flanked by two reclining sandstone lions holding a ram and a mythical creature in their claws. These are symbols of Staufer imperial power. With their tense bodies, the lions also represent defensive vigilance.

Located between today's town hall, the central traffic axis Rheinstraße, and the Am Brand shopping center, the tower still exudes medieval charm. Inside, the Kunstverein Eisenturm Mainz e. V., founded in 1975, allows visitors to soak up the historical atmosphere while enjoying contemporary art. It holds exhibitions in the rooms of the tower.
