Iron tower
The Iron Tower is located in the old town of Mainz, close to Mainz Cathedral and Marktstraße. The tower is a popular destination for tourists and is one of the city's historical sights.
Gate tower of the city wall
Of the 34 gate and watchtowers that once formed part of the medieval city fortifications, three still remain today: in addition to the Alexander Tower and the Wooden Tower, the Iron Tower, built around 1240, has been preserved as a stone witness to this era. The six-story tower got its name from the iron market that was once held on the banks of the Rhine.
From a gate tower to a military prison to a venue for art exhibitions, the use of the iron tower has changed over the centuries.
