Market fountain
One of the oldest and most attractive Renaissance fountains can be found on Mainz market square.
A "warning" donation
In 1526, the Archbishop of Mainz, Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg, donated the impressive fountain to the citizens of his city. Today, it is not only the oldest but also arguably the most beautiful Renaissance fountain in Germany. However, this draw well is not only significant from an artistic point of view, but also as a historical symbol of the balance of power.
At a time when there was no central water supply and public wells with high-quality water were rare, the archbishop's donation initially appears generous. Upon closer inspection, however, the scenes depicted clearly reveal political and didactic elements. They are reminiscent of the Peasants' Wars, which were also brutally suppressed in Mainz.
