A statue in honor of the poet Schiller stands on Schillerplatz in Mainz.
Namesake for the square
During the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the great poet's birth, the idea arose in Mainz to erect a monument in his honor.
There had been several points of contact between Schiller and Mainz in the past: while fleeing Württemberg in 1782, Schiller stopped here, among other places. He visited the cathedral and the city, spent a night in Mainz, and continued his journey the next morning.
From November 1789 onwards, he repeatedly sought a position in Mainz over a period of several years. He pinned his hopes on Karl Theodor von Dalberg, governor of the Elector of Mainz in Erfurt. However, the Mainz Republic put an end to Schiller's efforts in this regard. The prospect of him coming to Mainz under Dalberg as Elector was lost. Schiller himself was politically skeptical of the Mainz Republic.
Schiller's statue was initially erected at the other end of the square, which was named after the monument. It has stood in its current location since 1929.
