The Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident on the A63 this afternoon at 4:14 p.m., between the Mainz-Süd and Klein-Winternheim interchanges. Since this area is heavily trafficked during rush hour, a traffic backup had already formed on the way to the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene, a traffic accident involving four vehicles was confirmed. A total of four people were affected by the accident, including two with minor injuries who were taken to hospitals in Mainz by the emergency medical services as a precaution.

The fire department secured the scene against oncoming traffic, disconnected the battery of a severely damaged vehicle, and covered spilled fluids with absorbent material. After approximately 90 minutes on the scene, the site was handed over to the highway patrol.

The Mainz Fire Department was on site with ten personnel, the emergency medical services with eight personnel, and the police with two personnel.

Early Saturday afternoon, a basement fire in Mainz’s Oberstadt district kept emergency crews from both professional fire stations and the Mainz-Stadt Volunteer Fire Department busy.

Around 11 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was alerted to a basement fire in Mainz’s Oberstadt district. Emergency crews from both fire stations, as well as the Mainz-Stadt Volunteer Fire Department, immediately headed to the scene. Upon the arrival of the first responders, the situation was confirmed by heavy smoke billowing from the area around the basement entrances. The apartment building had been completely evacuated by the time they arrived. The stairwell and a few apartments were slightly smoke-filled.

The fire in a basement storage room was quickly extinguished by a team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus. The fire department inspected and ventilated the building, cleared out the affected basement compartment, and extinguished the fire in the outdoor area. One person with mild respiratory symptoms was examined by emergency medical services as a precaution but did not need to be transported to a hospital. Mainzer Netze temporarily cut off power to the building. The operation lasted approximately 2 hours. All residents were eventually able to return to their apartments.

On site were the Mainz Professional Fire Department with 22 personnel, the Mainz-Stadt Volunteer Fire Department with 6 personnel, an ambulance, the police, and Mainzer Netze.

On Thursday evening, a major fire broke out in an apartment building in Mainz-Lerchenberg. 170 emergency responders were on the scene. Two buildings are temporarily uninhabitable.

The Mainz Fire Department was alerted around 6:30 p.m. to a kitchen fire on Gustav-Mahler-Straße in Mainz-Lerchenberg. When the first responders arrived, massive flames were already billowing from an apartment on the third floor, prompting an escalation of the alert level.

Several teams wearing breathing apparatus searched the building sections, evacuated residents, and began firefighting operations from both the outside and inside. The latter proved difficult, as the fire had already spread under the roof sheathing to the neighboring building. Parts of the roof were laboriously opened to extinguish all remaining embers. By 8:45 p.m., the fire was under control.

The approximately 70 affected residents and neighbors were cared for by disaster response teams at the nearby community center. Four residents were diagnosed with mild smoke inhalation; three of them were transported to hospitals in Mainz. Due to the damage, residents from two buildings cannot temporarily return to their apartments and are being housed elsewhere.

Approximately 100 firefighters from Mainz, Ingelheim, Nieder-Olm, and Worms, equipped with specialized gear, were deployed. The emergency medical services and civil protection units were on site with approximately 70 personnel. A technical advisor from the THW assisted the incident command in assessing the building. The vacant stations of the professional fire department were staffed by volunteer fire departments from Mainz. During the large-scale operation, these units had to respond to two additional calls.

The operation lasted until midnight. Numerous onlookers and residents created additional work, as some showed little understanding for the fire department’s measures and were reluctant to move away from the smoke. The Mainz Fire Department has no information regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. Mayor Günter Beck also visited the scene to assess the situation and thanked the emergency personnel.

On Saturday evening, emergency responders in Mainz had to rush to the aid of a boat that had lost control on the Rhine. Shortly before 6 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department, the Water Police, and emergency medical services were called to the Rhine near the Kaiserbrücke. A boat had gotten into trouble there after water had entered the engine compartment, causing the engine to fail. A fire department boat quickly reached the damaged vessel, secured it, and towed it to the nearby Zollhafen. Under the watchful eyes of many bystanders who were watching the commotion from the shore, the boat was brought to its mooring and secured there. An employee from the Zollhafen marina also arrived quickly and was able to help the boat owner with pumping out the water and troubleshooting the problem. There were four people and a dog on board, who were quickly brought ashore thanks to the fire department’s efforts. Personnel from the Mainz Professional Fire Department, the Mombach and Weisenau Volunteer Fire Departments, the Water Police, and the emergency medical services with an ambulance were on the scene. The operation for the emergency responders concluded around 7:00 p.m.
