Ideas for the use of the historic crematorium

The historic crematorium at the main cemetery.

The new crematorium went into operation more than ten years ago—and
the historic one was largely retired. While funeral services, among other things, can still be held in the
chapel, the rest of the listed building with its striking copper dome has remained unused since then. But that could change in the medium term. At least a first step "back to the future" of the building has now been taken.

Win-win project and restoration costs

"Transform the historic crematorium into an indoor columbarium": this is the task currently being tackled by students at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, which is ultimately intended to be a real win-win project: for the budding academics, it is a realistic exercise that will ideally provide ideas on what such a solution for the lower parts of the building could look like.

But even if the results exceed all expectations, another problem must be solved first. The historic crematorium is showing signs of wear and tear. And the necessary restoration work is costly. According to expert estimates, it will cost around one million euros. This is yet another hurdle on the historic crematorium's path "back to the future."
