Saving endangered monuments
Mainzer Altertumsverein e.V.
The Main Cemetery, which is over 200 years old, with its significant tombs, commemorates many prominent figures in Mainz’s history. Despite the efforts of the city and the historic preservation authorities, further commitment is needed to halt the increasing deterioration of the site and to preserve the outstanding significance of this historic ensemble of ornate tombstones and park grounds, which is also an atmospheric place of tranquility.
That is why the Mainz Antiquarian Society and the Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz are seeking supporters with a sense of cultural and historical responsibility who will contribute financially to the “Many Can Achieve More” campaign organized by Volksbank Darmstadt Mainz!
If funding is secured, the Mainz Antiquarian Society will begin the professional restoration of the tombstone of Friedrich Lehne (1771–1836). Lehne was actively involved in both politics and academia and is best known today as a co-initiator of the Gutenberg Monument in Mainz. Any additional funds donated will go directly toward the restoration of the next gravestone, that of Karl Anton Schaab (1761–1855), historian and co-founder of the Altertumsverein.
