Wastewater charges must be adjusted

Cost increases leave little room for maneuver / Mainz remains favorable compared to other cities

The picture shows a sink into which water is flowing

Maintaining and expanding Mainz's approximately 800-kilometer sewer network and ensuring the safe operation of the largest municipal sewage treatment plant in Rhineland-Palatinate costs money—and unfortunately, that cost is rising. The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and high inflation have thrown a spanner in the works of long-term calculations in virtually all sectors of the economy in recent years. And yet Mainz is still in a good position in terms of drainage fees, even in 2025.

From January 1, each cubic meter of wastewater will cost €2.04. Rainwater will then cost €0.78 per square meter. That is 42 and 3 cents more than before, respectively, and thus around €1.58 per month for a single-person household in the area of wastewater.

This is not exactly cheap, but it is still at the lower end of the scale compared to other cities in Germany. "A small consolation, some will understandably say. And yet the comparison shows that we are really doing everything we can to operate as cost-effectively as possible," explains Jeanette Wetterling, CEO of Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz.
