Experience Mainz—Culture, Events, and Enjoyment in September 2026
Anyone interested in Mainz’s Jewish history is in for a first-of-its-kind experience this year: following the 2021 designation of the SchUM sites in Speyer, Worms, and Mainz as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the visitor center at the Old Jewish Cemetery will open on September 6. It is one of a kind and pays special tribute to the medieval Jewish history of Mainz, the mother congregation of SchUM. The day marks the start of a lovingly curated opening week as well as another major attraction of Jewish culture: the SchUM Cultural Days. But beyond that, the state capital of Mainz is also the setting for numerous cultural highlights this month. Wine, monuments, science, intercultural exchange, and illuminated buildings are just a few of the themes September has to offer. Pull out your calendar—one highlight follows another.
