Anyone interested in Mainz’s Jewish history is in for a first-of-its-kind experience this year: following the 2021 designation of the SchUM sites in Speyer, Worms, and Mainz as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the visitor center at the Old Jewish Cemetery will open on September 6. It is one of a kind and pays special tribute to the medieval Jewish history of Mainz, the mother congregation of SchUM. The day marks the start of a lovingly curated opening week as well as another major attraction of Jewish culture: the SchUM Cultural Days. But beyond that, the state capital of Mainz is also the setting for numerous cultural highlights this month.
