Mainz animal shelter: Relocation to interim solution during the demolition of the elevated road

The demolition of the elevated road in Mainz-Mombach makes it necessary to relocate the Mainz animal shelter. The approximately 1.3 kilometer long bridge has considerable structural defects: Installed prestressing steel is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking, which is why there is no alternative to complete demolition for safety reasons. It is not possible to continue operating the animal shelter at its current location during the construction work.

The City of Mainz has therefore developed an interim solution in close consultation with the animal welfare association to ensure that the animal shelter can continue to operate during the demolition work. Two temporary locations are planned on Mombacher Straße and “Am Rondell,” which can be operated in parallel. These sites are already integrated into the ongoing procurement process for the elevated road demolition. The implementation will utilize, among other things, modern modular construction, which enables functional and appropriate housing for the animals.

The animal shelter is expected to be fully relocated by early 2028, as demolition work at the current site will begin then. Construction of the interim locations is expected to begin in 2027, with the animals being moved gradually over the course of that same year.

Mayor Nino Haase emphasizes: “As the City of Mainz, the future of the animal shelter is very important to us. That is why we have been in active dialogue with those responsible for some time now to develop solutions together. This applies to both an interim and a permanent location.” Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Environmental Department, also underscores the necessity of the measure: “Unfortunately, there is no alternative to demolishing the elevated highway. And it is not possible to operate the animal shelter at its current location during the construction work. Therefore, I very much welcome the fact that we have found an interim solution together with the animal shelter and the commissioned specialist planner. We are well aware that this transitional solution is not an optimal one. That is precisely why it is explicitly intended as an interim solution. At the same time, we are working hard to create a better, long-term perspective for the animal shelter.”

The interim solution is deliberately intended as a temporary measure. At the same time, the city is continuing to work with the animal shelter to find a permanent location that better meets the long-term requirements for space, animal welfare, and the surrounding environment. However, if no suitable new location is found, the animal shelter will in any case be able to return to its current location.

The City of Mainz is aware of the challenges associated with the move. Particularly with regard to the space at the interim locations, the planning focuses on more efficient use and modern architectural concepts. At the same time, the Animal Welfare Association is closely involved in all further steps to ensure practical solutions.

The demolition of the elevated highway must take place as soon as possible. This makes it all the more important to ensure that the animal shelter’s relocation is carried out on time and without a hitch. The city is providing comprehensive support for this process—from securing suitable sites and planning to organizational and logistical assistance during the move.
